I think one-speeds are better because it's a real challenge and better exercise (and even up-hill isn't THAT bad). Multi-speed bikes are for wimps. :P Of course, if you want something easier to pedal, of course a multi-speed bike is the best choice.

I cant recommend against a one speed bike enough. The hills around PSU are going to be killer with only one speed. There is a reason bikes with multiple speeds exist. Ultimately its your choice but a one speed bike will become more of a hassle and a hindrance than enjoyable.

If you get a one speed bike, you can't adjust the level of resistance the bike gives when you pedal, but they're generally cheaper and require less maintenance. If you're just riding around Portland, a one speed is a good choice. Bicycling is a really fun way to get exercise too! :D
